Researching MLM Companies – Real and Scam

Have you looked at the number of MLM opportunities out there today? There are so many that you’ll have to do some research to tell the good companies from the scams. The internet has generated its fair share of scams, but there are legitimate opportunities out there, too. If you arm yourself with the right information, you can learn to tell the legitimate companies from the illegitimates.

There are many MLM companies that offer a legitimate way to work from home, but they have to overcome the fact that the scam artists have painted all MLM companies as shams. Pyramid schemes often overshadow the real opportunities, and they probably will continue to do so, for as long as currency still exists.

It’s actually pretty easy to tell them apart. Look at whether you are paid for selling services or products (usually legitimate) or simply for gaining new members under you (pyramid schemes). If the only purpose is to establish people under you, who establish people under them, then it’s a pyramid scheme, plain and simple.

The Federal Trade Commission was set up to protect people from being fleeced by pyramid schemes and other ingenious ways to make money that also happen to be illegal. The FTC generates a list of all the confirmed scams that people have registered with them, so check any business opportunity that seems too good to be true with their list, because if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Other countries have their own version of the FTC, too – it’s only a matter of finding the agency that serves your local area and looking at the list they have.

Most work from home scams are based on the principle of charging too high a price for a service or good, so it will be helpful to compare the price you will have to charge your customers in order to make a profit with the prices for the same type of products through other companies.

If a company offers small business opportunities with no training, they may also be a scam. Any company worth its salt will want to train you to be successful. A real company will want to make sure you can make money for them if they bring you aboard.

There are websites that offer legal advice for small business “opportunities” and other facets of home business. Once you sign on with a company, you may not have as solid a cause for recourse, so investigate them before you fork over any money.
