Do You Really HAVE an Upline?

When I joined my first MLM company, I learned what an upline and downline were. I had one person in my upline who was helpful, but she assumed I knew how everything “worked” (like adwords, etc) and I was a complete newbie. When I tried the second place I got into, I knew the upline’s name, but he never even emailed me to welcome me or just to let me know he was there if I needed help. As it happened, I failed at both endeavors anyway. But I did welcome all my downline people and tell them I was there for them if they had questions (which I would have had to look up the answers to :) .

With the second company I was involved with, the upline was never there for me to train me or answer questions. That makes in doubly difficult, when you need help and are working hard. After all, my downline was HIS downline, too, just a bit further down. This particular program had an unlimited number of downline distributor potential.

Usually, each person in MLM goes to their upline for help initially, but then either the upline gives up on them, or they figure out their own ways of getting things done. But if your downline has questions that you can’t answer – or find the answer to, fast – they’re likely just going to go somewhere else.

One company that had a superlative upline was Ameriplan. I was in daily contact with my sponsor AND the person above her. But I still never sold one discount health plan to anyone. I refused to cold-call, not that it’s recommended. I had professional cards and brochures made up and plastered them all over town, and I never got ONE call from anyone. And they had a list of good places to put them, which I followed (laundromats, auto garages, etc.). So in that case, I had an excellent upline and the program still never made me any money. I don’t belong to that group anymore, and I am not promoting them. Just noting that my sponsor and upline were very helpful.

I learned a lot on my own in all the programs I worked with, but I still never made any money. In fact I lost – a LOT. Bundles of bucks just in google adwords and yahoo marketing. I had quite a few visitors in my downline at the program I tried after Ameriplan, but they never pursued any specific area of this program. I did, and my upline said that’s where she made HER money, but I never made anything. I got really excited when I saw “bonuses” at one site within the system, but then I realized those were only the equivalent of “10% off coupons”, so I’d have to have spent $3000 to get the $300 in bonuses I had on the books.

If you get into a good solid program, with a responsible and helpful sponsor or upline, this business can be a lot easier, and probably a lot more successful. It’s disheartening to put time and effort into a program when there is no one there to help.
